I am so happy with how our Hanukkah cookies turned out this year. I decided to do two different sugar cookies - vanilla and chocolate. Both recipes came from one of my favorite blogs - <a href="https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/" target="_blank">Sally's Baking Addiction</a>. I used this <a href="https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/best-sugar-cookies/" target="_blank">Best Sugar Cookie</a> recipe and this <a href="https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/chocolate-sugar-cookies/" target="_blank">Chocolate Sugar Cookie</a> recipe. For the chocolate sugar cookies I <a href="https://shop.kingarthurflour.com/items/bensdorp-dutch-process-cocoa-16-oz" target="_blank">used this awesome Bensdorp Dutch-process cocoa</a> that I picked up at the King Arthur Flour flagship store in Vermont over the summer (hopefully more about this in another delayed summer road trip post). My older kids (ages 5 & 7) were really able to help this year, which was a lot of fun. </div>

The key to sugar cookies is included within these recipes - don't make the dough too thin (1/4 inch is good), don't overbake - of course, who likes an overbaked cookie of any kind?! - and chill the dough after it is rolled out - this is key. </div>

For my birthday I requested a lunch at <a href="https://www.gyu-kaku.com/charlotte/" target="_blank">Gyu-Kaku</a>, a new Japanese BBQ restaurant on E. Stonewall St. in uptown. There are 700 locations worldwide including in Canada, Hawaii, California and New York. We had a party of eight including my three little ones and my parents. The restaurant is in the Savoy apartment building and the parking situation is challenging - more about this later.<br />
<br />
We arrived a couple minutes before the restaurant opened for lunch and thankfully the hostess let us in since it was raining. The restaurant's policy is not to seat until the entire party is there and they were sticking to this like glue even though we were the only ones there and we let them know the rest of our party was parking. Once we all made it in and we figured out the awkward parking situation we were seated and from there the service was excellent. I did find it curious that there was very little leg room on the booth sides where the grills are - I am 5'7" and barely fit so choose your seat carefully!<br />
<br />
The idea is that guests grill their own meats and veggies - yakiniku in Japanese - on grills set into the tables. Then there are also side dishes and appetizers served by the waitstaff. There are set menus or you can order a la carte. We opted for a set menu for four which we supplemented with some additional options. There are a couple of kid menus but we opted for our kids to share with us. <br />

Unfortunately I did not take photos but many of the dishes were truly enjoyable - the salmon was a family favorite and several of the beef cuts were truly delicious. We also enjoyed the asparagus, bibimbap appetizer with crispy rice and shrimp cooked in a small pot on the grill. The spicy pork and cabbage salad were also really good. <br />

For dessert they have s'mores, a nice touch and for my birthday they sang to me and brought me a piece of matcha mille crepe cake - yum! My kids got a kick out of the singing and tambourines.<br />

Our waitress was truly extraordinary, satisfying both the grandparent set and the toddler set, even bringing out graham crackers and a juice box for my cranky little one. She really helped correct the experience after the parking situation.<br />
<br />
So, the deal is that the restaurant validates for 90 minutes. The way they do this is require you to log into an app (can do as a guest), put in your license plate number and credit card and then they credit you for 90 minutes. There are several issues with this. Some people value privacy and prefer not to enter all this information. Also, 90 minutes was not enough. We were not lingering over our meal, we truly were not finished at that point. We did not get towed or charged but it adds unnecessary anxiety for your guest to have to go through this. Hopefully Gyu-Kaku can get something else worked out with the landlord in order to address this soon.<br />

Overall I truly enjoyed my birthday lunch and found it to be a neat experience. Gyu-Kaku is clearly using quality ingredients and have some quality people working in the Charlotte location. Yes I am still alive and still eating. My third child was born in May and while she is an absolute love and doll baby it has not made a return to blogging easy considering my business, children and other commitments! But I have been thinking about the blog and plan to write a bit more often even if I don't have photos. I know everyone loves photos but that coordination is one of the more difficult parts of blogging. If possible I will add some to this post and delete this!<br />

We just took the kids (yes all 3 of them) to Quebec City and enjoyed the pastries, "chocolat chaud" - I taught my older 2 kids to say this before we left - and cultural and outdoor activities there. We also learned that my older daughter loves escargot and enjoyed them fresh out of the shell! As far as restaurants we were not able to sample any of the really high end places since I did not reserve any child care while there, but we enjoyed <a href="http://restolabuche.com/" target="_blank">La Buche</a>, <a href="https://www.belloristorante.com/home-2/" target="_blank">Bello </a>and <a href="https://chezjules.ca/en" target="_blank">Chez Jules</a> in the old city area and also <a href="http://www.cassismonna.com/en/" target="_blank">Casa Monna et Filles</a> restaurant and cassis farm and the <a href="http://www.chocolaterieorleans.com/" target="_blank">Ile D'Orleans Chocolate Shop</a> - you must get the chocolate dipped ice cream cone. As luck would have it the above 3 restaurants had no problem with us ordering takeout which was very helpful the kids! Then we would either eat at our apartment - 3rd floor walk-up courtesy of AirBnB or eat by the beautiful fountains near City Hall which my kids also loved running through.<br />
<br />
We had a terrible experience with American Airlines on the way -
cancelled flight made us delayed by 30 hours, yes that is thirty not
three! On the plus side they let us change our flight back so we stayed
an extra night at <a href="https://www.valcartier.com/en/accommodations/valcartier-hotel/" target="_blank">Valcartier Hotel</a> where the kids swam and hit the waterslides at the indoor Bora waterpark. <br />
<br />
We saw an awesome fireworks display and the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FLIPFabrique/" target="_blank">Flip Fabrique</a> free acrobatics circus which apparently comes with a new show every year. Another upside to our flight being that late and us arriving in the 10-11 PM hour was that the kids stayed up later than usual the whole time. While that might not usually be an upside, it allowed for us (and them) to experience some of the evening activities that we would not normally allow because of the timing. And we typically all took a long nap so that was also positive. <br />

A few weeks ago I was invited to try <a href="http://babushkaspierogi.com/" target="_blank">Babushka's Pierogi </a>and the whole family came along. The restaurant is located in south Charlotte on Highway 51. I have very little experience with Russian / Eastern European food, other than my Grandma Sarah's stuffed cabbage, and I truly enjoyed trying the unique and delicious items on their menu. Everything at <a href="http://babushkaspierogi.com/" target="_blank">Babushka's</a> is homemade from scratch and you can tell! My kids adored the chicken samsa pastries with sesame seeds on top and the pieroshki were so delicious as well, both served warm. The menu includes a variety of soups such as the classic Russian borsh, with some of the soups only served on particular days. Since we were there on the weekend, we were lucky enough to try the solyanka, which contains a variety of sausages and meats - delicious! The Polish Platter is a good choice for first-time diner. I do love my stuffed cabbage, and this one did not disappoint! The potatoes were also very tasty and pierogis round out the plate (see below for more about those!)</div>

My favorite things were the pierogi - where have these been all my life? The only ones I ever had before were back at Oberlin College in Ohio where I went for one year and they tasted nothing like the delicious pockets served at <a href="http://babushkaspierogi.com/" target="_blank">Babushka's Pierogi</a>.You can get potato and cheese, sauerkraut or potato and mushroom pierogi and they come with carmelized onions or butter and chives - yum. The sour cream served in the middle accentuates the flavor even more - I am starting to drool thinking about these! I had never even heard of pelmeni, which are dumplings made with beef and pork. Another kid-pleaser for sure! </div>

We were able to try a sample of the Hungarian goulash as well - delicious beef stew with vegetables. Definitely a good choice on a cold day. For dessert the chocolate turtle cake was a hit with the kids but I preferred the subtler honey cake. Both cakes have very impressive layers. </div>

We had so much food that we took some to our Russian friend and she declared it just like home! If that's not an endorsement I'm not sure what is! I encourage you to give <a href="http://babushkaspierogi.com/" target="_blank">Babushka's Pierogi</a> a try. You will be glad you did! They also offer catering services and sell pierogi, pelmeni and cabbage rolls frozen. There is also a small grocery section containing Russian and European products. On March 15, 2017 chefs from around the Charlotte area will gather at The Westin Charlotte uptown to support <a href="https://www.gotrcharlotte.org/" target="_blank">Girls on the Run Charlotte</a>, an organization dedicated to empowering girls through running. Each participating chef will prepare a three course dinner table-side, providing a unique experience for diners to interact with chefs and enjoy a one of a kind dinner experience. Some of my favorite mainstay items are the tuna tartare, the flat breads and the brussels sprouts. <br />

<u><b>Not-So-Silent Mary Pickford</b></u>, inspired by the 1920s favorite, includes Mt. Gay Silver Rum with Luxardo Maraschino, Solerno Blood Orange, house-made Grenadine, pineapple, lime, house-spiced cherry and a clove sprinkle.<br />

<u><b>Brooklyn Bridg</b></u>e, a cross between a Brooklyn and a Manhattan cocktail, mixes Knob Creek Rye with Amaro Montenegro, Dolin Dry Vermouth, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth and a lemon twist. <br />

New menu item - asparagus salad. I relly enjoyed this dish; the feta and asparagus really go nicely together. We also tried the new ground duck flat bread which I ate before I could photograph! It has a balsamic glaze and was sodelicious. I would definitely order it again.<br />

Hopefully you have already heard the incredible news that <a href="http://www.goldencowcreamery.com/" target="_blank">Golden Cow Creamery</a> is coming to South End next month at the corner of Church and Summit. This is particularly exciting for me since the store will be within walking distance from my office and a light rail ride (or longer walk) from my house.<br />

Founders Alex and Liz Hannah are opening <a href="http://www.goldencowcreamery.com/" target="_blank">Golden Cow</a> in order to bring unique and delicious fresh hand crafted ice cream made with premium ingredients to Charlotte. When I heard this news it brought to mind my obsession with ice cream - as loyal readers may remember I once <a href="http://amyonfood.blogspot.com/2011/06/ice-cream-contest-excitement-amy-on.html" target="_blank">won an ice cream contest</a> back in Atlanta with my lemon-basil chocolate chunk flavor - and it reminded me that for a brief time my husband and I contemplated opening our own ice cream shop here in Charlotte. We did not! But this is still missing from Charlotte so I truly hope <a href="http://www.goldencowcreamery.com/" target="_blank">Golden Cow</a> takes off!<br />

I was lucky enough to be given some of their ice cream to sample. I tried Chai Spice with Candied Orange Peel and Vegan Coconut Green Tea with Lemongrass and Chocolate. The Chai Spice was awesome - I love candied orange peel so this really hit the spot. Unfortunately for me after my initial tasting my husband ate the entire rest of the sample before I had time to try some more! I think the orange peel would also taste great with a dark chocolate ice cream - yum! The vegan ice cream had a great flavor. Since I am not a vegan I probably wouldn't order it - I love the cow's milk cream too much - but it is wonderful that vegans (and the dairy intolerant) will have options here - I am sure they will come running! <br />

I was lucky enough to have freshly baked cranberry orange scones

Fielding Williams. The scones were still warm from the oven, buttery and delicious with the perfect amount of sweetness. It was also delightful to talk with Fielding and hear her story. I LOVE Korean food and Charlotte does not have enough of it. When I heard about <a href="http://www.hiyafoodtruck.com/" target="_blank">Hiya Food Truck</a> I knew I had to try it. I got in touch with owner Daniel Pitre and came by his truck one rainy day to try some of the options. I came so early that the food wasn't ready yet and he was kind enough to make a special delivery to my office - I was honored to get such special treatment! The bulgogi is my usual go-to and it was very tasty but I liked the spicy pork better - so delicious, great spice! Other menu items include the bulgogi burger and chicken katsu. I love that there are noodles and rice in the dishes and that they are served with daikon pickled radish (that's the yellow item!) Later the same day I decided I needed more so I also tried the dumplings (not pictured) and they were a huge hit with my 3 year old. I was recently invited to try <a href="http://wewalka.us/" target="_blank">Wewalka European Pastry Dough</a>. The Austrian company makes 2 types of pizza crusts (Family Style slightly thicker crust dough and Bistro Style thin crust dough), croissant dough and puff pastry dough and all the doughs are now available in the United States. All four types of dough are conveniently rolled up on parchment paper for easy use and are available at Harris Teeter locations in the Charlotte market and Ingles locations in the Atlanta area. The doughs contain no hydrogenated oils, no corn syrup and no bleached flour and they are vegetarian (no meat products). </div>

My family truly loved these doughs - especially the round pizza dough (Bistro Style - the Family Style is rectangular) and the puff pastry dough. I made all sorts of pizzas as well as rolled croissants with sausages and with chocolate (not pictured). I really like using the puff pastry for pizza as well - very elegant and tasty. The <a href="http://wewalka.us/recipes" target="_blank">Wewalka Recipe collection</a> helps with more ideas. Having the pizza dough on parchment paper that you leave in place while baking is SO helpful. Although other companies' big balls of dough look fun, my experience is that rolling the dough ball into what you want can be difficult, not to mention messy! <a href="http://wewalka.us/" target="_blank">Wewalka </a>makes it very easy with the crust already rolled and clean-up is quick and painless. Look for all four types of dough in the refrigerator case near the biscuit dough. There is also a coupon on the website <a href="http://wewalka.us/coupons" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>

<a href="http://www.futobuta.com/" target="_blank">Futo Buta</a> has quickly become one of my very favorite restaurants. Lucky for me it is within walking distance of my office so I am able to visit regularly. The ramen here is amazing, with several varieties including classic versions with pork belly, a salmon version, a ramen with parmesan cheese and even a vegan ramen. I can't wait to come here when it is REALLY cold to have a bowl and warm up. I also love the creative side dishes like the awesome brussels sprouts and shisito peppers and the raw items, featured on the fresh sheet daily. The pork belly buns are awesome too. And to top it off, they have homemade soft serve ice cream, usually green tea (my very favorite) and a second option. I am a huge fan of Japanese food in general, having spent a semester near Osaka in college; Charlotte finally has a real ramen house and I am so glad to be able to visit frequently!<br />

<a href="http://www.competitiondining.com/events/city" target="_blank">The NC Competition Dining Series</a> will once again be held at <a href="http://www.bonterradining.com/" target="_blank">Bonterra Restaurant</a> beginning March 23. Twenty-Four chefs from the mountains to Charlotte will compete iron-chef style with attendees voting on each dish via a free app without knowing which chef prepared which dish. The winners will face of in semi-finals and finals, with the series concluding in early May. Local NC products are heavily featured, with a particular product/food highlighted during each battle.<br />

Last year I attended one of the battles and it was a lot of fun - ingredient was sweet potato! <br />

This year Amy on Food will be one of the media judges in the battle between <span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;">Paul <span>Verica</span> of </span><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><a href="http://www.heritagefoodanddrink.com/" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif";">Heritage Food & Drink</span></a></span><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;">, versus Vincent Giancarlo of </span><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><a href="http://cantina15eleven.com/" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif";">Cantina 1511</span></a></span> on March 23. I have been extremely busy over the last few months with work and family. In June 2015 I had my daughter who is now 8 months old. Between the two kids (I also have a 28 month old son) and my thriving law practice (adoption and surrogacy) I stay very busy! But finally - now that the baby is sleeping through the night - I am committed to getting back to blogging - yay!<br />
<br />
I have still been dining out a good bit even though I have not had time to post often. Last year I was invited to sample the menu at <a href="http://baku-restaurant.com/" target="_blank">Baku</a>, likely the trendiest restaurant in Charlotte and a place I have enjoyed several times. The small plates of creative Japanese cuisine, many made on the robata grill, as well as the sushi, are outstanding, both in presentation and taste. There are also some awesome drinks offered as well with 2 bars to choose from. My favorite menu items include the tempura grouper bites, the sushi platter on ice, the black cod, the coal roasted shishito peppers, the pork belly skewers and the sweet potatoes. For dessert the presentation of the truffles with cherry sauce and ice cream on ice can't be beat. <br />

<a href="http://baku-restaurant.com/" target="_blank">Baku</a> is a worthwhile destination for a special occasion or just to treat yourself or your loved ones! Also a great destination for a business dinner or drinks. They have creative cocktails and martinis and an extensive wine list. For a while Sunday brunch was offered and I kept meaning to go but I did not have a chance to sample it. For now, brunch is not being served, but I do hope they might bring it back during the warmer months! I look forward to returning to <a href="http://baku-restaurant.com/" target="_blank">Baku </a>again very soon.</div>

I recently had the opportunity to try the newest Charlotte location of the <a href="http://mellowmushroom.com/store/charlotte-uptown" target="_blank">Mellow Mushroom - uptown</a> near the new Knights baseball stadium and Romare Bearden Park. The space is airy and modern with a long bar on one side as well as booths and tables. There is also patio seating. My family really enjoyed our experienced and we sampled quite a few different items. My favorite thing by far was the Maui Wowie pizza (below) - definitely some strong flavors going on with it, which I love - especially the banana peppers and jerk chicken! The bruschetta and wings were excellent, as always, and our little one enjoyed the kids mac & cheese as well. To top things off we tried several of the freshly baked cookies - delicious. Mellow Mushroom is a wonderful addition to the uptown dining scene. They have a full bar and are open LATE too - until 11 PM Sunday - Wednesday, until midnight Thursday and until 3 AM Friday and Saturday. Definitely a great place to keep in mind for a late night snack! </div>

I was very excited to be invited to a special dessert tasting featuring the delicious sweets offered at <a href="http://barcocoacharlotte.com/" target="_blank">Bar Cocoa</a> at the Ritz-Carlton in uptown Charlotte. <a href="http://barcocoacharlotte.com/" target="_blank">Bar Cocoa</a> is the only one of its kind in the world and its corner location (Trade and College) allows both hotel guests and uptown Charlotte pedestrians to partake of pastries, gelato, coffee, chocolates and other goodies. Cooking classes, catering and custom cakes are also offered and there is even a champagne and chocolate all dessert dinner option on the weekends!</div>

The French macaron selection is truly impressive. New flavor blueberry lavender has a subtle lavender aftertaste with strong blueberry notes. Other favorites include coconut, red velvet, honey, dulce de leche, and caramel but there are at least 10 macaroon options to try on a daily basis. </div>

The new eclairs are incredible - my favorite item we tried. The outside of the eclair is crisp and a little crunchy, giving way to smooth fillings - nothing at all like the soggy eclairs typically found in grocery stores. My favorite flavors were the classic and the caramel but all of them were truly excellent. </div>

<a href="http://www.chuys.com/" target="_blank">Chuy's </a>is a Tex Mex chain with a huge following with its first store in Austin, Texas circa 1982. The Charlotte outlet opened summer 2013 and I recently had the chance to try it out. I had never been to another <a href="http://www.chuys.com/" target="_blank">Chuy's</a> before and I really enjoyed my first experience. Much of what makes <a href="http://www.chuys.com/" target="_blank">Chuy's</a> fun and unique is the atmosphere, including several kitschy / themed rooms like the palm tree room and the hub cap room. We ended up sitting outside which was a great choice since my son was with us. He was able to run around and play near the fountain, which is just outside the patio seating area. The inside is great for kids as well - in addition to the interesting decor, there is a tortilla making area where kids can watch and make their own. </div>

Previously, Charlotte lacked a Tex-Mex presence so it is great to see <a href="http://www.chuys.com/" target="_blank">Chuy's</a> filling this niche. The menu is huge and includes several specialties that you don't see often - like Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken. We tasted all the sauces - and there are LOTS - see photo below. My favorite was the hatch chile sauce - delicious and you would be remiss not to try the boom-boom sauce on something! The appetizer platter was a crowd pleaser as well, especially the loaded nachos and the chicken flautas. I liked the thin chips and salsa - allowed me to eat more of them and taste all the sauces! My other favorites from the meal include the chile rellenos - we tried the one stuffed with shrimp and cheese but there are several options and the sinfully rich and delicious tres leches cake - one of my favorites anyway - this version really took the cake!! There is a full drink menu available including specialty margaritas which my adult dining companions thoroughly enjoyed. If you have not yet tried <a href="http://www.chuys.com/" target="_blank">Chuy's</a> I encourage you to check it out - it is located at the corner of Sharon and Morrison, convenient to all your South Park shopping needs. </div>

I have been meaning to blog about <a href="http://www.latagliatella.us/" target="_blank">La Tagliatella</a> for quite some time so I am glad I am finally able to post about this relatively new Italian option in Charlotte. <a href="http://www.latagliatella.us/" target="_blank">La Tagliatella</a> is a chain restaurant, but unlike most that we know, most of its locations are in Spain with only 6 locations in the US. The Charlotte location opened early last fall and we enjoyed a friends and family night and media night. A few weeks later, we took my mom for a special birthday dinner and had a very enjoyable meal. The above pizza, actually called the Tagliatella, is one of my favorite menu items - how could it not be delicious with fried eggplant and drizzled with honey and balsamico glaze? We also really enjoyed the Caesar salad and several pastas - I can't recall exactly what is in every photo but we did enjoy everything. For dessert, try the bocconcino - a cheesecake topped with delicious custard. There is a lot to choose from and the dining room has a neat, unique European feel. There is a special lunch menu, kids menu and bar menu and regular specials including some great specials in March - see the website for <a href="http://www.latagliatella.us/" target="_blank">details</a>. I encourage you to try <a href="http://www.latagliatella.us/" target="_blank">La Tagliatella</a> if you are uptown - it is definitely a great option at Epicentre. </div>

<a href="http://www.moesoriginalbbq.com/lo/matthews/" target="_blank">Moe's Original BBQ</a> has locations - they call them "joints" - in 9 states, with the majority of the restaurants located in Alabama. I was invited to try the location closest to me (Matthews, NC) last fall. While I am not in the Matthews area often, we were thoroughly impressed by <a href="http://www.moesoriginalbbq.com/lo/matthews/" target="_blank">Moe's</a> and enjoyed every bite. I wish they would open another Charlotte location closer to uptown - maybe this is a possibility?! Everything we tried was truly delicious. I also like the fact that Moe's has special side dishes each day, so there is always something different to try in addition to the regular tasty sides that they have. We tried both the pulled pork and the ribs and we also had a few wings. The pulled pork was great and the ribs were extraordinary. My favorite sides include the sweet potato casserole and the marinated slaw. Even my son who wasn't quite 1 year old at the time, loved it and ate the BBQ and the green beans. </div>

In addition to the regular menu, which includes smoked turkey, smoked chicken, a salad and even a smoked tofu sandwich in addition to the pork and ribs, there are daily specials and brisket is featured on a weekly basis. Even vegetarians would be happy here with either the tofu sandwich or a veggie platter since there are so many sides to choose from. Soon after moving back to Charlotte in 2012 I visited the Ballantyne location of <a href="http://www.librettospizzeria.com/" target="_blank">Libretto's</a> - post <a href="http://amyonfood.blogspot.com/2012/06/librettos-pizzeria-italian-kitchen.html" target="_blank">here</a>. Now a third Charlotte location at Parktowne Village (corner of Woodlawn and Park Rds.) joins Ballantyne and Epicentre. I recently had two very enjoyable meals at <a href="http://www.librettospizzeria.com/" target="_blank">Libretto's</a> - Parktowne and even had the opportunity to speak with owner Mike Libretto about his restaurants and the restaurant business here in Charlotte. </div>

All of the food was good and the atmosphere at this location is pleasant, nice for couples and families with a bar available for single diners as well. The eggplant parmigiana remains a personal favorite. However, this was my first time trying the pizza and it was also very good - so many delicious specialty pies to choose from. My husband and I both love spicy foods so the Il Diavolo was right up our alley with pepperoni, spicy sausage, jalapenos and roasted garlic - yum! The stuffed mushrooms were also fantastic as an appetizer and we enjoyed the linguini with clam sauce as well. The best news is that this new location delivers to where we live - awesome! I look forward to returning to <a href="http://www.librettospizzeria.com/" target="_blank">Libretto's</a> to try more soon, including the wings, Square pizzas, Calzones and Strombolis. </div>

I recently had the opportunity to sample <a href="http://www.pfchangs.com/index.aspx" target="_blank">P.F. Chang's</a> summer seasonal menu at the Phillips Place location in Charlotte. This location, along with several others, have been recently remodeled, with the new dining room now lighter and brighter, with a comfortable feel. The large horses inside are gone but there are still terracotta statues around the restaurant. We had a fabulous server for our meal - very upbeat, nice and attentive without being overbearing. The <a href="http://www.pfchangs.com/summer/" target="_blank">summer menu can be found here</a> and includes several dishes in addition to what we tried such as Korean BBQ Chicken stir fry, Quinoa "fried rice", Smoked Duck spring rolls and sushi selections. </div>

We tried the heirloom tomato and basil salad to start, which was very tasty and fresh. That, along with the grilled prawns dish (above) were my favorites that we tried. The sauce on the swordfish was also very good - I think they could add a bit more of it to go over the rice. For dessert we tried the mandarin key lime sweet treat, a delicious after-dinner selection that is essentially key lime pie with a twist. I like that <a href="http://www.pfchangs.com/index.aspx" target="_blank">P.F. Chang's</a> has these smaller desserts since you are often too full to enjoy anything too substantial after partaking in all of their other tasty dishes. </div>

Since I love all Asian foods, especially Vietnamese, Japanese and Korean, I was very excited to try out <a href="http://nomnomburgers.com/index.html" target="_blank">Nom Nom Burger</a> which opened fairly recently across from Park Road shopping center on Woodlawn Road. We met and talked with one of the founding partners, Tung Ngo, who is very energetic, personable and dedicated to making this creative concept work. We visited on a Tuesday night and it was "kids eat free" night for kids age 10 and under with purchase of an adult meal. Once our little one is old enough to actually eat his own meal (it won't be long!) this will be a great place to go. There were lots of families as well as some couples and groups of friends. The dining room has a neat waterfall that all the kids were fascinated by. </div>

Finding myself missing Korean food the most since I moved back to Charlotte, I knew we had to try the Kalbi Burger. It includes kimchi, a fried egg, sesame roased nori (seaweed), spicy aioli and roasted garlic. Wow. This was a fantastic burger. Part of the excellence is because of the meat that is used, which is Sterling Silver ground beef, but the flavors in the Kalbi really make it top-notch. The signature Nom Nom burger was also good - it includes Provolone cheese, sauteed Shiitake mushrooms with mirin, caramelized onions with ginger orange marmalade and mayo. It is really a toss-up with the Kalbi but my favorite item we tried is the Ahi burger - a thick piece of Ahi tuna seared and put on a sushi rice "bun" with avocado, spinach and sprouts with both wasabi and citrus soy dipping sauces. Sushi lovers - you must try! We also tried the calamari, which was light, spicy and delicious. The shrimp chips (a Vietnamese item) were really tasty, but regular fries (can be made garlic or jalepeno) as well as sweet potato fries are also options. </div>

For dessert we wanted to try the Honey Bunz with ice cream but since they were unavailable we had the fried cheesecake "Xango", which was good. There is a Ben & Jerry's right across the patio so that is another option if you have any room after trying the delicious offerings at <a href="http://nomnomburgers.com/index.html" target="_blank">Nom Nom</a>. Next time I'm trying the Banh Mi Burger (it's actually chicken) - if I can keep myself away from the Ahi! There are also more burger options (including a plain one for the non-adventurous), chicken sandwiches, fish sandwich/tacos, salads, noodles and even a veggie burger on the menu so vegetarians and even vegans should be able to find something. While Malika of <a href="http://atlanta-restaurantblog.com/" target="_blank">Atlanta Restaurant Blog</a> was here in town, we also had the opportunity to check out <a href="http://www.blockandgrinder.com/" target="_blank">Block & Grinder</a>. I was psyched to try this place since I missed the media event they held prior to opening. Block & Grinder is unique in that in addition to being a full-service restaurant and bar, there is also a butcher counter where you can purchase meats to cook at home. The restaurant focuses on premium beef as well as natural, organic meats and wild game so carnivores will be in heaven. However, there are options even for vegetarians including an "anti-burger" made from lentils and the house-smoked salmon is sure to please any pescatarian as well. </div>

We had a lovely Sunday brunch here and we were table to try a good portion of the brunch menu. The above biscuits were outstanding and everything else was very good. My favorite dishes (although very hard to choose from the items we tried) were the house smoked salmon - my son's first taste of smoked salmon and he loved it - and the corned beef hash. The coffee (French press) was also wonderful. </div>

Full bar. I didn't sample any alcohol this visit but the cocktail offerings sound fantastic! I look forward to returning to try the lunch and dinner menus. The pork belly, duck and quail options sounds particularly enticing and I'd wager this would be a great choice if you want a good steak.</div>

Crawfish at the Crawfish Boil! Each Friday in May e2 offered a traditional crawfish boil for $5 per person. They served 400 pounds of crawfish the night we were there - let's hope they bring this back soon!</div>

I was recently invited back to <a href="http://www.emerilsrestaurants.com/e2-emerils-eatery" target="_blank">e2</a>, this time for dinner with my husband and with fellow blogger Malika Bowling from <a href="http://atlanta-restaurantblog.com/" target="_blank">Atlanta Restaurant Blog</a>. Malika and her husband, Glen, came up from Atlanta to check out some restaurants while they stayed with us for the weekend in Charlotte. Friday night started off with a "Bam" - truly - as we dined in style at <a href="http://www.emerilsrestaurants.com/e2-emerils-eatery" target="_blank">e2 </a>with fabulous food and service. </div>

My favorites included the oyster shooter (not pictured but I blogged about the oyster shooter <a href="http://amyonfood.blogspot.com/2013/03/e2-emerils-eatery.html" target="_blank">here previously</a> when I had lunch at <a href="http://www.emerilsrestaurants.com/e2-emerils-eatery" target="_blank">e2</a>), the gumbo, the gulf coast drum stew, the special fish dish with stuffed kale and the blue corn brioche bread pudding. We also really enjoyed the cocktails, particularly the famous Grasshopper and the wonderful wine selection. <a href="http://www.emerilsrestaurants.com/e2-emerils-eatery" target="_blank">e2 </a>is a really good choice for lunch or dinner. Brunch is also offered with specials for Father's Day, coming up this Sunday. </div>

Desserts: from top left, clockwise, blue corn brioche bread pudding with coconut-pineapple ice cream, banana cream pie, apple crepes with bacon and ice cream, sweet potato cheesecake. The bread pudding was different from any other bread pudding I have ever tried - and SO good! </div>
