BLT Steak - Restaurant Week Review

Chicken liver pate with bread - our amuse bouche.

Popovers - warm and tasty.

Last week Cal and I met fellow foodie and blogger Malika from Atlanta Restaurant Blog and her significant other, Glen, for dinner at BLT Steak - see Malika's review here. We wanted to try this place during restaurant week since it's regular menu would blow just about any budget. I've heard about this place for years when reading about NYC restaurants, where it was founded by Laurent Tourondel. The BLT label is now attached to about ten restaurants across the country. For $25 we had a choice of 3 appetizers, entrees and desserts. The chicken liver pate (above), popovers and brownie bites (below) were also included.

Our table of four was seated at a booth near the bar. It was loud and became louder as the evening progressed - despite my feelings one has to admit that this is a popular place, although part of the crowd could have to do with being there during restaurant week. We were also near the door connecting the restaurant to the W Downtown Hotel, so we saw a lot of people coming and going. One upshot is that the restaurant validates the valet parking fee for up to 3 hours, which is great since it's something like $15. I also liked our waitress, who was very excited to tell us about everything - she also spoke clearly and loudly (she had to!) so that we would hear all of our options.

Gazpacho with Tabasco sorbet.

Duck terrine.

The gazpacho was delicious. It tasted like a special vinegar was used and I enjoyed the tangy soup itself as well as the spice brought along with the Tabasco sorbet - a unique idea that was well executed. The duck terrine was okay, but a little heavy for me. I did adore the popovers (their signature item) presented with a recipe card - cute idea. I didn't try the beet salad, which was the other appetizer offered.

Salmon - very flaky and tasty.

Hangar steak with onion and jalepeno mashed potatoes.

Although the name contains the word "Steak", I enjoyed the salmon over the hangar steak. As I've said before on this blog, I am not a meat-lover, so perhaps this is why I wasn't so fond of the steak. It was presented with a rich sauce as well as with butter on top; a grilled onion and jalepeno mashed potatoes accompanied the steak as "sides". The potatoes lacked punch for something professing to include a hot pepper. The steak was also presented with a little plastic "medium rare" sign that reminded me of Quincy's or Ryan's - anyone remember those places?! The salmon on the other hand was delicious, cooked perfectly with a nice sauce, over cauliflower.

We also tried one of their signature drinks, the huckleberry mojito, which was another overpriced cocktail without much depth. For me it was too strong, which I'm sure others would not complain about! Others at our table ordered red wine, which was a whopping $15/glass!

Fruit cobbler.

Carrot cake with ginger ice cream.

Brownie-like pastry served at the end of the meal.

The desserts were all okay, although I did really enjoy the carrot cake with ginger ice cream (very gingery). The coconut ice cream was tasteless and the fruit cobbler nothing special. The complimentary brownie bites were too rich to end this already rich meal.

The regular menu is not up on the web for the Atlanta location, but from what I saw a person would be hard pressed to eat a full meal (without drinks) here for less than $75 per person. For me a place this expensive should feel more special and should be more memorable. We had a great time dining with friends, but next time we'll go someplace else!

After dinner we headed to the 16th floor of the W to check out the bar - nice view! If you're in the area you should definitely check this out. I'd be much happier paying high dollar for a drink up here than spending so much downstairs at the restaurant.

Spoon Eastside

Calamari - delicious!

A couple of weeks ago we took some out of town family and friends to Spoon Eastside on Moreland Avenue. I also had an early dinner there about two months ago sans camera. Overall this is a fine place for Thai food, although the prices are a bit higher than some of my other Thai faves like Little Bangkok on Cheshire Bridge - or shall I say, the portions are a bit smaller! The place was not crowded at all on Friday night, which might mean bad news for this restaurant, which also has a location near Georgia Tech. Everything was good but one of the main reasons I like this place is that it's right across the parking lot from Morelli's Gourmet Ice Cream. Spicy food followed by creamy goodness cannot be beat! My favorite dishes here are the fried calamari, the massamun curry and the spicy seafood salad (not pictured). What is your favorite Thai restaurant?

Star Provisions Lunch and Desserts

Shrimp Po' Boy.

Last week I finally tried Star Provisions for lunch. I'd been before once to buy some high quality salt and peppercorns and soft serve ice cream with olive oil & sea salt - try it if you haven't - definitely a different yet oddly satisfying taste. This time I opted for the shrimp po' boy (above), which lived up to the hype. I really enjoyed this: soft bread, perfectly fried shrimp, good sauce. I didn't try the chicken sandwich but it looked tasty, with a Green Goddess dressing.

To please my office-mates I returned to work with the below desserts. My favorite of the three is the chocolate peanut butter bar, which is strange because I would have thought I'd favor the blueberry tart. The S'mores bar was interesting, but perhaps a little too much marshmallow - also, I think it loses something when it's not hot - perhaps a brief stint in the microwave would have helped. Star Provisions is a must-try for any foodie - their prepared foods to take home as well as their foccacias and pizzas looked amazing. I need to come back more often!

Get a Cuban from Papi's

Cuban sandwich.

Last week we had dinner at Papi's Cuban & Caribbean Grill, which is now full service (no more ordering at the counter). Both the Cuban sandwich and the Mariscos de Puerco were excellent. I'd order the sandwich over the pork dish next time, though. It was really tasty. I also tried a mamey milkshake (from Wikipedia: The fruit's flavor is variously described as a combination of pumpkin, sweet potato and maraschino cherries, with the texture of an avocado. Some consider the fruit to be an aphrodisiac), which tasted good and sweet but not really very fruity (and I'm not sure about the aphrodisiac part!). Papi's has two other locations also, one in Kennesaw and one in Stockbridge.

Hae Wood Dae - Korean BBQ

The main event - beef and banchan.

Last weekend while my mom and stepfather were visiting we made it to Hae Woon Dae for Sunday lunch. The place was empty right around noon and we were seated in a private room - a nice touch! We ordered the bulgogi as well as the plain beef and the squid. To begin, we tasted their seafood pancake (kind of like Korean pizza) as well as the dumplings. Overall I enjoyed lunch, especially the squid, which was cooked to perfection, juicy and not at all rubbery. However, remembering back to our April visit to Han Il Kwan, Hae Woon Dae did not quite deliver the same oomph. This surprised me as the reviews seemed to favor HWD over HIK. The seafood pancake was most disappointing as it was not at all crispy. I have heard that Duluth is the place for Korean BBQ, but I rarely get out to that area. What is your favorite Korean BBQ place?

Sheridan's Frozen Custard

The Razzle Dazzle - vanilla custard with raspberries and hot fudge - this one was mine!

Sheridan's Frozen Custard in Tucker is definitely worth checking out. They have various sundaes, smoothies and specials as well as their signature "concretes", which consist of frozen custard with various toppings or flavors blended in. We first tried this place in Memphis last summer and loved it - come to find out there's another one much closer to home!

Chocolate ice cream soda - mom's favorite.

Steve tried the mocha almond concrete (left)... he later had to supplement with a cone of chocolate custard (not pictured!). Calvin went for Grant's Grasshopper (right) - vanilla custard blended with mint, chocolate chips and Oreo cookies.

Floataway Cafe = Fantastic!

Crispy squash blossoms with ricotta and basil.

While my mom and stepfather were in town we ate very well! On Friday night just after they arrived we headed over to Floataway Cafe, located on Zonolite Road near where Briarcliff Rd. intersects with Johnson Rd. Living so close to this location, I cannot believe this is my first time here. I love the space, which has apparently expanded since their original opening. There are two dining room areas and a large bar area. We had a wonderful meal. My favorites were the squash blossoms, the quail, the trout and the toffee pudding cake - delicious. You should definitely give this place a try!

The desserts were all wonderful but our favorite was the toffee pudding cake with vanilla ice cream. With just the right amount of sticky sweet mixed with cool, fresh ice cream, this one really impressed us and had us licking the spoon for more!
